Last week, I asked a Junior Marine to speak candidly about his experiences since joining. I wanted to know if the Corps met his expectations. One comment stood out: he felt that many individuals seem to act in their own self-interest, caring more about their image than their fellow Marines.
This Made me think The power of influence is often discussed in terms of impacting those below us in the chain of command. However, one of the key lessons I’ve learned recently is the importance of influencing up the chain as well. Over the past month, my younger Marines have taught me invaluable lessons. Leadership is about trusting those under you to make the right decisions. It’s not about dictating; it’s about teamwork. When we’re in sync, we are an unstoppable force.
Like fish that don’t get credit for swimming, exceptional performance doesn’t always come with recognition. Don’t seek pats on the back or awards; know that your contribution is vital to the team’s success. Never doubt your value. Be open, communicate, make mistakes and learn, but strive never to repeat the same mistake twice.
This message isn’t about me; it’s about them. I’m here to lead, but also to listen, adapt, and grow. Our goal is to be the most lethal fighting force on the planet. Even if you don’t see all the cool stuff happening, know that it wouldn’t be successful without your support.
So, when you feel unnoticed, remember you have the power to influence both up and down the chain. Someone is looking to you to make the right decision with their best interests at heart, and someone is counting on you to carry your own load. Use this responsibility to make the best decisions for the mission and the team.
Remember is not about you, or me, it’s about us. The power of influence is with all of us.
“In the field, no one cares what rank you are—if you’re not pulling your weight, you’re a liability.”
